IKEA Hacked Sewing Machine Table :-)

So I've been setting up my craft room lately.  Since we have 4 bedrooms in our place, I converted our upstairs guest room into my craft room.  Don't worry - we still have plenty of room for guests!

Anyway, the back story: My mum has a Horn sewing machine cabinet for her machine.  The great thing about them is that they have a hole cut out where the sewing machine can sit so it can be flush with the top of the desk.  The problem is that a Horn cabinet is crazy expensive. Like thousands of dollars expensive!

After much hunting around, I found an Ikea desk that I thought I could hack.  Basically, I was looking for something that was white, sturdy, and with a shelf underneath that would hold my machine.  The Ikea Smadal Desk was perfect for it and only $89 (unfortunately it's not on their website new product - they just added it!).  This desk had a shelf with a drawer, but after inspecting it, I decided that the drawer didn't need to be there for the desk to still be stable.  So here's some pics of the hack:

First up, I measured the machine and traced around it with a ruler and pencil (on the top side of the desk)

Made the edges nice and round

Then got out on the deck with two of our old chairs, some clamps, a drill and a jigsaw and got to work. I hadn't used a jigsaw in years and getting around the corners with the standard issue blade was hard work, but I got there in the end.

Then I ironed on a piece of melamime edging (for reference, this is located in the sheeting section of the hardware store - it took me a while to find it because no one in Lowes knew what it was).  Getting around the corners with the iron was really hard and the job looks a bit messy in those areas. Oh well. Once the machine's in there, you can't tell.

And voila! the finished product. I ended up putting the extra melamime from the hole underneath the machine, raising it up so it's almost level with the desk top.  I could have raised up the shelf by relocating the holes, but that would also have required cutting the back board down to size.

Now all that's left is to raise up the whole desk a few inches. I tried installing some castors directly onto the feet of the desk, but no dice. My hardware store owning dad told me to get some scraps of timber (lumber) to put at the bottom, *then* put the castors on.  I'll do that later .

(Note, I should also give credit to my husband who set up the lower half of the desk while I messed around with the top of it).

Over Australianisation

Americans love Australians.  So much so, that many take pride in doing their best Australian accent for me whenever possible, or, if they're a business advertising something Australian, they'll do their best to use as many Aussie terms as they can think of (or Google).

Today I'm flipping through the Trader Joe's grocery store (TJ's) catalog and noticed a section devoted to their new Australian and New Zealand food lines.  For the most part, the Australian terms are fairly right on, but others are a bit messed up.

First, it bothers me whenever I see "G'day, Mates!" - I see this a lot here, yet I've never heard "mate" pluralized after "G'day" in Australia.  And yes, I also sigh, because I know that 99% of Americans reading it will pronounce it "good-die" in some version of Pommy accent.  (This is written in a blurb that says, "G'day, Mates! Don't miss out - there's more tucker for the bun-fight on back. Hooroo!" Makes me wonder how many readers will actually understand that! haha.)

The intro to the article will surely irk anyone living south of Sydney, with "'Aussie, Aussie, Aussie - Oi, Oi, Oi!' Who says you can't cheer on good grilling as you might a rugby match?".  (I can hear my mum seething already).

They do correctly make use of the terms, "bog in," "fair dinkum," "exy," "cobbers" (a term that seems to have died out everywhere in Australia except for in my family, and it's not usually plural), and "deadset". They also write, "dinky-d" - but it should be "dinky-die".

Anyways, I reckon I should go get me some Queensland Mango Sorbet.  Sounds pretty moorish.

Kitchen and Lighting Makeover

There were two things that we really wanted to change when we bought our house: the light fixtures, and the kitchen (especially the wallpaper).

Doing a whole kitchen rehaul won't be for a while yet, but today I decided to get to work pulling down the wallpaper, removing the old caulk from around the countertop, and painting the whole kitchen.  I got as far as step one and step two.  Hopefully  can make a start on the painting tomorrow, but we'll see.  Doing home improvement in this sudden heatwave probably isn't the best idea.

Before (after removing the switch plates)

During (actually, I'd started peeling at it a few weeks ago )

After.  And then I decided I should get rid of the old caulk and put in new caulk.  It took *forever*!

While I was doing the kitchen, Ka-Loon got to work playing Wii Mario Galaxy.  And later, installing three of our new light fixtures.  Farewell ugly, rusting gold!

Before - Ka-Loon removing the old fixture

After! So pretty Reminds me of my parents place.

Before - I'm not a fan of the traditional chandelier look, so I was looking for something more modern. (oh, and that's the new paint behind it)

After - I'm still trying to get used to it, but it's definitely an improvement over the old!

Rerouting Woes

I'm looking for meeting space in NYC hotels for my boss.  I googled a couple of possible ones and here is one of the conversations:

Receptionist: "This is [hotel name], how can I direct your call?"
Me: "Sales office, please"
Receptionist: "Ok, i'll transfer you"
Voice 1: "This is [forget what department/name she said]"
Me: "Hi, I want to enquire about meeting space for XYZ date and XYZ number of people"
Voice 1: "Meeting space, you said?"
Me: "Yes"
Voice 1: "Ok, let me transfer you to Sales" [hold music]
Me: ???isn't that where I was sent to??
Voice 2: "Executive offices, can I help you?"
Me: (thinking, I bet I get transferred again, repeat spiel)
Voice 2: "So you're not wanting to book sleeping space as well as meeting space?"
Me: "No, just meeting space"
Voice 2: "Ok, one moment" [hold music]
Voice 3: "Hello, you've reached [name] with the Sales office........ Please leave your message after the tone"

Aiya!!!!!!
